What Are the Benefits of Seeing a Pediatric Dentist in Santa Maria?

One of the benefits of taking your child to a family or pediatric dentist is that they specialize in caring specifically for the dental needs of children of all ages.

Visiting the dentist – especially for the first time or after they’ve had a bad or scary experience – can be anxiety-inducing for children. Working with a team that understands children, their needs, and how their brains work can help ease anxiety.

One of the reasons your Santa Maria family dentist loves working with children is that developing a good relationship with a dental healthcare provider can help:

  • Teach children the importance of oral health

  • Show them that going to the dentist doesn’t have to be scary

  • Children have good dental experiences

Our team will do our best to help reduce your child’s anxiety (and yours, too) so that they can associate going to the dentist with comfort and fun.

When Should You Take Your Child to
Their Pediatric Dentist for the First Time?

The American Dental Association recommends a child’s first dentist visit occur as soon as they get their first tooth. The first baby tooth comes in at around the six-month mark. At the latest, they should see their Santa Maria pediatric dentist by their first birthday.

Another critical age for a child’s oral health is age seven when their dentist should evaluate their dentition for orthodontic treatment. However, this is strictly for potential treatment using braces. A child’s first general dental visit should be earlier than age seven.

Why Is It Important to Treat Cavities in Baby Teeth?

Besides preventative dental care and orthodontic treatment, children sometimes need restorative treatments like fillings.

Sadly, many say treating baby teeth isn’t necessary because these teeth eventually fall out.

We urge parents to do all they can to prevent cavities and have a dentist treat them once they develop because dental decay can cause a lot of pain.

Additionally, untreated decay can cause issues down the road, such as needing to remove a tooth before it’s ready to come out. Losing a baby tooth early can cause long-term malocclusion issues and problems with adult teeth entering the mouth correctly.
